Intex Technologies, on Monday (25 Aug 2014), launched
India’s cheapest smart phone Intex Cloud FX at Rs.1,999, powered by the Firefox
OS platform.
The phone will be exclusively available on e-commerce site
Snapdeal.
The phone has a 3.5-inch HVGA touch-screen along with the
2G/3G dual-SIM support. It has an internal memory of 256MB, which can be
expanded up to 4GB.
“With the launch of Intex Cloud FX, we aim to enable the
masses to get smartphone experience at the cost of a feature phone. We are
delighted to partner with Snapdeal.com. The partnership allows us to offer the
smartphone pan-India at a revolutionary cost,” Keshav Bansal, director, marketing
at Intex Technologies, said in a statement.
Intex’s launch is likely to spur competition in the low-end
of Indian smartphone market, where players such as Samsung and Micromax are
fighting for the top spot. According to research firm IDC, of the 18.42 million
smart phones sold in India from April to June, 81 per cent are in the sub-$200
category. This will be the first Firefox-enabled phone, in a market dominated
by Android.
“With the support from Intex, Firefox OS smartphones in
ultra-low-cost category will redefine the entry-level smartphones segment,
which attracts people to transfer from featured phones to smartphones. Having a
stronghold as Intex, we believe Firefox OS devices are going to create another
momentum in Asia,” said Li Gong, President of Mozilla Corporation.
In a statement, the company said Firefox OS was a brand new
open operating system for smartphones built entirely using HTML5 and other open
Web standards. It was free from the rules and restrictions of existing
proprietary platforms, it added.
Mozilla will also launch its second smartphone Fire One in
association with BK Modi-led Spice Retail on August 29. The phone is priced at
Rs.2,299.
The phone will be exclusively available on e-commerce site
Snapdeal.
